Why does it function the way it does? That's a really dense question and a really dense answer.

In the event you want to know why I think that, it's pretty simple. It's not advertiser friendly to have people spamming "nigger" all the time, or even once, but allow me to elaborate on why that's bad.

The first major componenet is that if you (should) want to keep advertiser (and thus big-tech dollars) away from ruining a thing with ads, or influencer types from co-opting something to try and establish a brand: a good way to do so is to simply spam racial slurs etc at every opportunity. It's a litmus test that can tell you how badly corrupted or not a platform is by centralizing forces. If you keep things ugly, the homogenizing forces of corporate America stay the fuck away. What a lot of people do not realize is that eventually, after people have been free for long enough most people stop feeling a rush from typing or saying a forbidden word, so they don't make a point of it so much, because not everyone is permanently juvenile.

The second major component is that you'll always have some people who will spam nasty shit, they are just built different. But once the novelty wears off it is no different than speaking or typing any other profanity, fuck shit damn hell kike nigger faggot or anything else that might be considered not advertiser friendly, most people lay off the impulse, because they get nothing out of it, except to add some flavor, spice, or punch to a particularly emphatic statement. When you (over)react negatively to posts or content like this, when you not only self-censor but seek to censor people who do, you are the vanguard of everything rotten on twitter, on facebook, on youtube and it is all in the name of being a friendly brand for the masses to consume, and advertisers to exploit even if you do not realize it.

Third, the more you freak out, the more you block, report, brigade, the more you react because someone said something nasty, that is better than likes, reposts, or zaps to some people. The old adage of "don't feed the trolls" can be roughly interpreted as don't react whatsoever. Take your lumps and move on. People legitimately get a rush off that, and it's something that existed before anyone even invented the concept of a like on post. "trolling" is just the converse to respond to a post with "so true" "pura vida" etc. It's the complimentary opposite, and the more you have of one, the more some will naturally be drawn to balance out the scale.
