Spicebush flowers in the woods today! Lindera benzoin.

I love this plant. The bark and leaves are so fragrant, and the fruits are a unique, amazing native spice. People tend to treat it like allspice, but I think it’s much more like pickled lemon and curry leaf, with only a hint of clove. I like to fry them in butter and put the butter on anything I’d use curry leaf in.

Anyway, they start with just these cute green-yellow flowers πŸ’›

I tried growing it once, didn’t like the location I need to try again. Those blossoms kinda look like forsythia

I think they look a lot like sassafras flowers; they’re related. Sassafras flowers are in bigger clusters, though.

They’re all cheery yellow sparks in the woods, not quite as showy as forsythia but I think much cooler 😁
