I could host 40 smol vm’s that linode would charge $40/m for

These are weak. I used to have a 1u server (these are 4u each) that was about as powerful as both machines combined. In a few months I’m decommissioning a 4u that’s about 8 of these combined. It gets nutty fast

When I get back to having a little fuck you money, I may build an Amepere unit.

I can emulate arm with these, but I never got it working. Wonder how worse it would be compared to native

I’ve run on Ampere VPSs, and those damn things were fast. And it consumes a lot less power, which seems to be the real expense in DCs these days.

Yup. Fuckers are trying to get me to pay 80¢/kwh in a 8¢/kwh area, trying to tell me the spread is AC

🤥🤥🤥

Thank you! I’ve never really dealt with computing power like this, or don’t have a use case. For a little while in 2016 I hired a guy to do some high quality 3D scans of some art objects, but that was for fun and looking for a reason to try it out haha

Lol ya that probably isn’t too resource intensive. Its kind of hard to explain how useful CPU’s can get as well as how certain ones can do specific tasks so much better than another.

To benchmark this against your avg computer, the cpu of a rpi has a cpu passmark of ~800, the cpu of a 8 year old budget desktop is around 3000, a modern desktop around 8k, and one of these is ~20k. There’s a lot more stats for measuring specifics but these give you a rough idea.

But, I can commoditize the resources & only allocate 1/40th of the cpu/ram/storage capabilities to a specific virtual machine or container, so there’s a lot more flexibility than one would think. So your use case could simply be something tiny to passthru network traffic through wireguard to hide your home ip.
