I understand that many people buy bitcoin on exchanges and keep them there. That is something we need people to understand. Not your keys not your coins, but other than that and running a full node is there anything else individuals can do?

Ps - You’re already here, so far ahead of most.
One thing that will happen to the people, is realising that their purchasing power keeps increasing with bitcoin. They will be able to save and change the time preference. Most of the people never felt that. This feeling will deploy different ways of interacting with bitcoin in the future. I believe we are early, very early and this feeling of saving needs to happen first before unlocking the future.
