I didn't dream for the last 21 months or so. I guess because of various life stressors.

I started dreaming again about a week ago and all I have is nightmares.

Not sure what to make of it, but my current stance is that I'd rather have nightmares than no dreams at all.

Are you familiar with lucid dreaming? My nightmares are usually surreal enough that I recognize it has to be a dream. At that point I turn the dream around or wake up.
