My answer:

Firstly it's open source, so everybody can see exactly what it does, not just the code, but the blockchain and all transactions.

Secondly, (D)ARPA created the Internet and the US Navy created Tor. A lot of the technology we have today comes from the state.

Even the encryption we use today is a result of Phil Zimmermann copying and making public, state controlled RSA encryption.
