Feels to me like being able to support multiple kinds of wallets would help with Nostr growth. And maintaining a fork of the client sounds like a pain.

This is so true. Actually, I often got some opportunities recently to converse with the various kinds of devs from different web3 kind of circles like Ethereum, ICP, Arweave, NEM, and etc, and those kinds of DB, relays, and clients surprisingly already in development or even have been released. A lot more people than expected just started to show interest in Nostr, seeking for the possibilities to implement as an application layer.
