Usnea my latest medicinal discovery.

Also known as Old Man's Beard this lichen is an antibiotic, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antiviral.

It also indicates a healthy ecosystem as it will not grow in heavily polluted areas.

Look for it after a storm as the winds will knock down old limbs where it likes to grow.

I found several hand-fulls on my walk this morning that got knocked down in last night's heavy rains.

When I have collected enough I will make a tincture that I can use to treat respiratory, urinary tract, bladder, and kidney infections.

This amazing plant can do so much I am learning it is a must have for my medicine cabinet.

If I remember correctly it's called Pele's hair in Hawai'i, after Madame Pele goddess of volcanoes and fire.

She is said to present herself as an old woman with long white hair. Woe to those who do not render assistance to her should she ask for it.

Very cool.

Some people collect it from the forest where I live. It looks slightly different but it’s the same.

This weekend I ate some rosehips and juniper berries directly from the bush and they were amazing. I could feel my body thanking me

Medicine all around us. Amazing.

Very neat

Cool! I have that all over my yard after storms. How do we used it medicinally?

I suggest some internet research. You would make a tincture with alcohol and water. Soak it for 6 weeks to infuse the liquid with the medicinal properties if the plant. Then it can be sprayed on wounds to prevent infection, or taken internally (small amount mixed with lots of water to fight internal infections.

Thanks for the reminder of what to look for when buying a property... I have to start writing these down. Realtors are going to hate me. 😅

Interesting! Old man’s beard is available by the ton here. I use it primarily as a fir starter!

Also helps to stop bleeding when used as a poultice. So many options.

Wonderful, thank you for sharing

I have an alder bark container of this. it grows everywhere on our property, on the alder branches.

ive been putting small pieces in the french press with my coffee, off and on.

i knew the local tribes used it for lungs and digestive issues, but im going to research more about it now.
