Been wanting to experiment with Pemmican for a while now, and we finally made some!

First batch is just dried lean beef, cranberries, salt and tallow.

Going to experiment with other fruit and nut mixes next.

This stuff is nutrient dense!

I can see why Native Americans, trappers, and sailors used to eat it

since it’s shelf stable and DENSE

Nice I want to try it with persimmons

Interesting 😊

How’d this turn out? Did you try making some with blueberries?

This batch was a bit dry and the cranberries were strong.

Have since made some with pecans, tiny coco flakes, Macadamia nuts (too wet and fatty unless you pre-dry them a lot), and some other ingredients that I’m blanking on. The key is getting the fruit and nuts dry first, and only adding the rendered tallow as the binder.

It’s great road and emergency food when the kids are hungry in transit

This is so encouraging and energizing. I’ll have to give it a go sometime soon.

A good dehydrator and grinder go a long way.

I have an excaliber dehydrator that's excellent but used an old coffee grinder which was less than ideal since the quantites were so small.

If you find a better option for grinding pls let me know.

Hope it turns out well for you!

Any other tips and tricks you found helpful that you would have wished you knew on your first batch?

Not really. Just use quality ingredients, find a good traditional recipe and you should be good to go (its been a while since I've made a batch so nothing really stands out)
