Elevator riding in Japan is quite the experience. Their standard for personal space is much less, which means twice as many people as you're used to will load in front of you. They do not look around when the doors open to see who (behind them) might need to leave. You HAVE to say "domo", and then like a machine they all in unison squeeze to the sides to let you off.
