Looking to start a publication? I strongly recommend ghost.org , it is open source blogging software, it can be hosted for has little as $5 a month, any hosting provider you want, send emails, take payments for subscription, and more.

They also just seem like cool people.

It is what is running aboutnostr.com as well.

I would say it is better in many ways, WordPress has more customizations though, yeah you just pay hosting, they provide it for like $9 a month or you can host anywhere else.
