At what age do you start letting your kids run a gas powered push mower? My ten year old has been bugging me to do it. He's responsible with ATV's and firearms, so I am sure he'd be fine, but I am hesitant because when I was growing up, the kid up the road lost all his toes to a mower and grew up to be a pot-head.

😳

That's "toe"tally up to you!

Sorry I couldn't help myself.

Two cents here, let him practice on flat ground. Maybe walk behind him the first few passes to remind him to keep the mower away from feet (arms extended)

Can't recall when I first mowed, but 10 seems right. Especially if he is already responsible with firearms. He knows safety!

I'd say full send fren

The issue there is the height of the push handle and height of the child. Knowing my desire to not want to mow and get my kid to do it (especially if eager) I'd hack the handle off and weld it to a height that is safe for the kid.

Wear close toed shoes, eye protection, and proper heating protection.

Don't set the grass height too tall.

Enjoy.

Had mine ā€œstartā€ at 11. It took a long time to get it right. But by 13, he was doing a really good job. I’d say let him do spot mows until he figures out how to overlap correctly. By the end of summer he might be doing good enough for a whole mow. I just remember always having to go back out and polish it up a bit.
