If in your area, criminals commonly use AR-15s, is that a reason that law abiding citizens who want to defend themselves against these criminals should get stronger weapons than AR-15s? I'm confused now.

Yes. AR-15s are not high powered. It fires a medium cartridge, which is why many use it as a (big) pistol.

A step up would be an AR-10 which is a legit battle rifle.

Obviously. What confuses you? If you have a problem, any type of problem, you obviously want something that overpowers it.

Anyhow, the most important use case for guns is deterrence. If the bad guys show up with guns, you want to be able to show them a bigger gun, indeed. Chances are that they either give up before starting any serious shit, or that they bail when they hear your first BOOM.
