I know this is controversial, but I become more convinced of it every year:
Owning a pet is a net-negative life decision for the majority of people, particularly those living alone.
I see SO many people's worlds getting smaller from this. They purchase a pooping ball of fur for their apartment, then all of a sudden they can't go out for dinner, can't go on any spontaneous adventures, can't travel, stop dating...
It's being used more and more as a money-sucking, desperate companionship crutch, and an excuse to check out from real-world human interaction, which turns to regret later 🤷♂️
