We can see that happen already in many places. You just need to know where to look.

That said, a lot of scientific pursuits have large barriers to entry requiring expensive equipment and laboratories. The last lab I worked at had a couple multi-million dollar machines. Working with these independently is out of reach unless you bow to the gatekeepers.
