I was told an ancestor of mine with the last name garoutte spent much in pursuit of freedom. And lost all of it.

He was a cousin to the King of France, got into a duel and fell feom grace.

Took some of his ships, came to the United States to help fight in the Revolutionary war. Lost those ships and any record of his fortune. Others also lost records after the US Civil war.
