I don't really understand the point of this. As a user what would I use it for?

To talk to people without contaminating your feed with junk no one cares about.

I kind of liked it once I understood it. It was a confusing feature until someone pointed it out to me. I wonder why they changed it.

Yeah, I think design was difficult to understand. We can make it better.
