Accurate take. I would add that if nodes running core require significantly more data, then eventually people will switch to knots to save money on storage

This raises an interesting question. Is it possible to control the Bitcoin node software to download blocks without jpegs or boating stuff?

Not sure what you are talking about core and knots always will take same data on chain just depends on your prune settings

I think people are making mountains out of molehills as well. A lot more people are upset about someone getting banned on GitHub than upset based on technical arguments
