The theremin is an instrument you play without touching invented in the 1920s by Soviet scientist Léon Theremin.

Originally developed for proximity sensors, it became a musical device almost by accident.

Its eerie, wavering tones were popular in 1950s science fiction movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still and It Came from Outer Space.
