Who here has gone down the phone rabbit-hole? I’m an iPhone user but I’m open to switching to anything.
What are your thoughts? Stick with #Apple ?

There are some features that makes it hard for me to switch, like airdrop, or sharing the clipboard. Since I have a few macbooks, I use that all the time. Sure there are probably some alternatives, but I haven't found anything good (which makes communication between my other Windows/Linux computers a pain in the ass).
I use an app called KDEConnect with our phones (running GrapheneOS) , linux and windows PCs. It works pretty well.
>KDE Connect is a project that enables all your devices to communicate with each other. Here's a few things KDE Connect can do:
>
>
> Receive your phone notifications on your desktop computer and reply to messages
> Control music playing on your desktop from your phone
> Use your phone as a remote control for your desktop
> Run predefined commands on your PC from connected devices. See the list of example commands for more details.
> Check your phone's battery level from the desktop
> Ring your phone to help find it
> Share files and links between devices
> Browse your phone from your desktop
> Control the desktop's volume using your phone
> Send SMS from your desktop
Thankfully I don’t use many Apple specific features, so I don’t feel personally tied to apple based on some efficiency gains they might provide me with their other products. Apart from my iPhone, I don’t have other apple products I use frequently.
Thanks for your thoughts 🫂🫡
as always, it depends. what are your essential needs? what can you not live without?
without knowing too much, I'd say pixel phones are pretty good overall, you get regular updates, they're fast and camera quality os good.
My essentials are really just the bare minimum: talk/text, data, #bitcoin wallets, #nostr…that’s really it. I could away with a lot more if I moved to a phone that provided me better long-term quality, durability, and sovereignty. I’ll check out the Pixel phone.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts ☺️🫂
A few people hear have switches to a Google phone and installed graphene OS for its strong privacy focus. nostr:npub18ams6ewn5aj2n3wt2qawzglx9mr4nzksxhvrdc4gzrecw7n5tvjqctp424 could help
That’s what someone else commented, so I’ll check out the Pixel and installing graphene OS. 🫂
nostr:npub18ams6ewn5aj2n3wt2qawzglx9mr4nzksxhvrdc4gzrecw7n5tvjqctp424, what’s your take?
hey hey. i've bought an Apple device so im a bit biased. i also ran custom ROMs on my Android phones for nearly a decade so again, im a bit biased here. all of that said, Apple will never change, they haven't changed for 20 billion dollar companies, they won't change for no-name, no-face social protocols either.
ecosystem lock-in is real. i would not want to leave Apple either, if i had all of my data, media, friends, and family using it. it's a daunting task, but i would seriously considering doing it because of Apple's tyrannical decisions. if you value open systems and privacy a Google Pixel phone and GrapheneOS are the best options.
Tbh, I like the ease of use of iPhones. But somehow, I feel they’re not what they’re used to be anymore. I come from the iPhone 5s, that felt amazing! Now I bought a 12 pro a few years ago, but I’d never buy a pro again
I have the same sense about the iPhone. It’s easy to use, sometimes too easy. And I don’t think they are built to last more than a couple years. Storage, battery life, speed…etc. all seem to drop off a cliff after a couple years.

Hey Garret, I and my family use GrapheneOS on Pixel phones. It's been great for us, we've used it for several years now on at least two different models. If you have any questions, let me know. Or nostr:npub1gd3h5vg6zhcuy5a46crh32m4gjkx8xugu95wwgj2jqx55sfgxxpst7cn8c seems very knowledgeable, I think he's a moderator in one of their forums.
I’ll do my homework and circle back here. Thanks for sharing this thought. It seems to align with other people’s comments. 🫡🫂
Thanks for tagging me Chris, I am indeed a community moderator for the project. You can find me across our Matrix, Twitter/X, Discuss Forum and doing community outreach here on Nostr.
Happy to assist how I can Garrett, that is, if our warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful broader user base doesn't beat me to the punch. 😉👍
iOS safari Extensions and shortcuts make the phone worthwhile for me.
Are you running any shortcuts or extensions?
