My Dad had a list of the 100 books you should read before you die that he shared with me in my youth. I think I've read most of them, but I'm not sure.
He doesn't have the list anymore and couldn't recall, exactly, where he'd gotten a hold of the list. He assumed the NY Times.
The Times still puts out a list of the 100 books you should read before you die but now includes classics, such as:

* "Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments" — which is about black whores, as near as I can tell
* "Detransition, Baby" — messy triangular romance — between two trans characters and a cis-gendered woman — fucking **hard** pass
* "Heavy" — Laymon explores the cumulative mass of a past that has brought him to this point: his Blackness; his fraught relationship to food — racism AND fatphobia
