Rabbits eating mulberry prunings

https://i.imgur.com/pA6pEk4.mp4

I've pruned this mulberry tree several times this season to feed the rabbits. I barely made a dent in it this pruning and the rabbits got more than a full meal out of it. I'll keep pruning it until there's nothing left going into the fall. It was a volunteer in the food forest so I'm not concerned if I kill it. Eventually I might want the space for another fruit tree anyway. For now, it's growing into rabbit meat.

Can rabbits eat poison ivy? Will they get rashes?

My sheep eat poison ivy, so I assume the rabbits will too. I'll tell you what they definitely don't like, stinging nettle. It's the only thing they don't eat in the cannabis garden.

How do you stop them digging under the fence?

There is chicken wire bent in an L shape going 1ft on the ground and 3ft up the fence. The space is so large that they don't want/need to dig out either.

Pollarding the "weed" trees in the food forest

Inevitably, unwanted trees grow wild in the food forest but instead of cutting them down entirely to remove them, I pollard them. By pruning the tree back to the main trunk, I get food for the rabbits. If I kill the tree, okay but if it lives then it will grow even more food for the rabbits next season.

I do the same practice with the seedling apple trees that get too large to use as grafting rootstock. I didn't realize how convenient planting them next to the rabbit colony would be. Each year I cut all the branches of each of the trees and toss them into the rabbits. Each year the apple trees have more branches to cut.

I love how you format all of these notes. Super helpful and informative.

Thanks, I like stringing notes together with the quote feature to share the progression of the systems throughout the season. Or like in this instance, I can use an old note to give context. I like how the strings of notes can take you down a mini rabbit hole directly in the main feed too.

For sure! I like it. You do a great job of keeping all the rabbit holes organized.
