Since in Nostr we don't collect emails on signup, I like the idea of opting into subscribed notifications in DMs or in the notifications field.

This creates another loop within products and allows you to keep on top of content you may have otherwise missed.

Come to think of it, perhaps a new tab in DMs would be nice. Call it "Subscribed" or something. Then no matter which client you're in, as long as that's supported you can see a summary of content you have subscribed to.

I still think there should be a way to plug in an email, even a throwaway to get subscribed content that way as a lot of people still handle to-dos via email. I think that would be a great way to onboard from outside of nostr.

This doesn't mean you can't display the content directly inside the client too, but as long as it has its own feed and you can clearly tell what you've read and what you haven't. And a standalone client optimized for that experience (perhaps with paid subscription option) on top of that.

Can we implement nostr-based email?

it would essentially act as email but I dont see the reason for reproducing it exactly. At least allowing opt in email integration you're reaching the outside world (outside of nostr)

Nostr DMs practically are email. They should expire on the server though.

Expiry dates on events would be a great thing for assisting in managing the volume of data to eliminate stuff that users don't need to have relayed any more.

Maybe relays can advertise their expiry timeframes or is that controlled elsewhere?

I already thought a lot about this while designing a gossip protocol for Indra. Not having expiry for ephemeral data makes managing the purging of caches complicated, much simpler to put a reasonable time window on it.

As far as this nostr protocol goes, quite frankly, it's amateur hour in protocol design, and the supposed designer of it amply demonstrates on a regular basis how little he understands about security, distributed systems or even the most basic things like why bitcoin doesn't benefit from being anchored to shitcoin chains.

I am looking to add a „Subscribe to this thread“ feature to nostr:npub1current7ntwqmh2twlrtl2llequeks0zfh36v69x4d3wmckg427safsh3w. It’s not trivial to scale though. Also we are still figuring out how we could implement this I to our push notification service

so you think we need a better notification system which is more customizable?

I’m more interested in subscriptions because that gets people who rely on consistent payments to take nostr seriously
