What other email services are there to use? I’d like to get away from using gmail. Are there any “privacy first” services available?

Proton is a good privacy focused company. They have mail, cloud drive, and a vpn. Check them out.

I will say I have not dug too deep into how true “privacy focused” they are.

Proton and Tutanota are commonly mentioned on Reddit. If you pay for proton you also get aliases to mask your email.

Cloaked is what I’ve slowly been moving some accounts over to.

how much does that cost

Beta and what is available now is free. Sounds like they will eventually add more services that will be paid.

I like proton mail. With email the in transit and at rest are what you have to look at. When you send an email it might be end to end encrypted but is the reader you use keeping a copy

I use Proton. They're in Switzerland so they adhere to strict Swiss privacy laws (supposedly).

Apart from the other services already mentioned, you can try Skiff.

The duckduckgo app has an email forwarding service that generates new email addresses. You can use that when you sign up to various websites. That guards against the case their email list gets leaked (or sold)
