Felix, BTC hashes with SHA-256, something ASICs can do much faster and more efficiently using custom silicon. Your laptop could mine BTC for a year and still not cover the mining pool's payout fee.

What your laptop CAN mine, usefully, is anything based on RandomX, such as #monero (XMR). Then you can exchange the XMR for Bitcoin and zap to your heart's content :)

Xmrig is the software I would recommend, I forgot to add.

Thx for the tip but i'm not looking for profit, just want so play lottery with an very old notebook by solo mining. Also for ethical reasons I wouldn't mine shitcoins.

CPU mining was removed from core a couple of years back. I'm sure I could track down a version that would compile in 2023, but man, there's better lotteries for a general purpose CPU even just in the bitcoin space.

(a) Grind for a mad bitcoin vanity address of your choosing. I have one with a chosen five-character prefix, you could do way better. FelixIsBoss.* ? FelixThaStud.* ? BitcoinOrBust.* ?

(b) Liberate a seized bitcoin wallet for yourself! Find the address of a seized Dark Market, check which address the coin is sitting in now, and set that as your vanitygen target! There's literal billions if you hit the jackpot.

(c) Run a Lightning node. Okay, this one's not a lottery, but its a steady earner and supports the BTC ecosystem.

Thanks for the ideas, I already run a ln node on good hardware but vanity key generation is a cool idea, maybe also for a Nostr key.
