The balance in answering questions of immigration authorities (whether in the U.S. or elsewhere) lies in:

a) being honest, while

b) giving as little extraneous info as possible and

c) steering conversation clear of sensitive/non-positive issues in your case or personal profile.

The reality is that all immigration and citizenship applications are subject to discretion, to some degree, of an adjudicator, whether written into the law or not.

Realist advocates recognize this while unfortunately some other lawyers refuse to acknowledge the existence of important human factors outside of the letter of the law.
