Why can't we just use the mempool like it was Lightning? Isn't it supposed to be the waiting room of all transactions anyway?

Discussion

1. There is no single mempool. Every node has its own view.

2. The notion of the mempool is for layer 1 transactions awaiting inclusion and confirmation in a block. Apart from lightning's relation to signed but unbroadcast transactions, channel opens or closures, it is independent of layer 1.

No. Zero-conf is insecure, plus you'd end up paying normal (high) on-chain fees.
