Tariffs are bad. Not to mention pretty contrary to that whole free markets idea.

With tariffs you get wasted resources from inefficient domestic production (not to mention the dangers of encouraging domestic businesses to produce things that they don’t actually have a competitive advantage in producing), higher prices, dead weight loss… It’s just a very bad idea.

Lots of details are in this video...

Aggression is bad.

Defending yourself from aggression isn't pro-aggression.

Defending yourself from aggression lowers the likelihood and prevalence of aggression.

Tariffs are bad for the economy of the country placing them. it's like punching yourself in the face.

This is 100% incorrect. It’s clear you don’t understand tariffs or markets.

Did you watch the video?

Yes

When China tariffs US goods, does that have any effect on the US economy?

We have all that now. So no change is what your saying

What do you think is the origin of the enthusiasm for tariffs right now? Mercantilism has so many arguments for how it is counter productive. I’m kind of mystified by why this new approach to trade is the zeitgeist, unless it’s as simple as protecting supply chains for national security reasons. What other arguments are there in favor of tariffs that make sense?

I've heard the theory that this is bargaining chip. the idea being that the US will agree to drop the tariffs if other countries agree to buy more treasuries. And that this is a long term plan to lower interest rates, and help our fiscal crisis ...not quite sure how that all lines up, but I hope there is a plan!

But there is always the possibility that the 'people in power' are just being vengeful assholes. That has happened a lot in human history.
