My failure was in noticing the marks actually on the photos themselves. I thought it was something in the metadata files that I couldn't figure out how to find so I kinda gave up. I'm super intrigued with what Phil found though, and props to you Phil for figuring it out. I'd be fascinated by seeing another puzzle.
