Should devs call themselves engineers? 🤔

I've always hated the term. Engineering implies that if you fuck up, people will die. If developers fuck up, people may get mildly inconvenienced.

Lots of software falls into that category too. If software on the airplane fucks up...

Tell that to the 737 Max devs

Only if engineering is not a regulated profession in their jurisdiction.

🤣🤣🤣

I consider myself more of an engineer than a developer.

Engineer solves problems.

Dev develop code. Some code makes problems.

Nah.

Any dev that calls himself an engineer is not a good dev.

I have some opinions on that one.

For me dev is a slang for someone that likes to code stuff.

If you are building something, even if by coding, you should call yourself an engineer.

Also, please don't let the fucking fiat professional engineers association spoil that. Let them alone with their bridges and shit.

Yes. Engineering is the application of laws of physics / nature for use in our society. Devs do that. Now the level of abstraction might make someone more or less of an engineer. I (JavaScript, React, etc.) do not call myself an engineer, but rather a frontend developer
