Is it common to create a swale with a tiller?

The class we attended on swales at SOE were done with an excavator. I had already planted these trees before that class. Using the tiller was an easy way to get a water catchment where I wanted it and not dig up the trees already in place. This one is only about a foot deep and took about 7 hrs to dig.
