Because good luck being anyone else.
Because it doesnât point to a âgoodâ outcome. It just boosts self-esteem.
Sure you might encourage someone to do something they wouldnât. But you have no modality to indicate that the new action would be âgoodâ regardless of how you define âgoodâ.
Culture-based behavioral regulation is a reliable way to ensure homogeneity of a unified set of cultural values, which we could reasonably call âthe collective goodâ.
Would you tell Hitler/Stalin/Mao to âjust be yourself?â Of course not! Youâd be encouraging evil. They didnât need encouragement because they were malevolent narcissists. But that begs the question, how did they become narcissists? Iâd posit itâs, at least in part because someone, at some point encouraged them to âjust be themselvesâ. And look how that bloody went!
Hmmmm. interesting viewpoint. As a libertarian, i do find it difficult to tell someone to be something theyre not. Usually my core philosophy is as long as its not harming anyone else, let them do whatever the fuck they want. So i probably would agree with you on the hitler part, but i wouldnt tell a crackhead to not smoke crack if it makes him/her really happy and that is their passion. Crack. Sometimes different viewpoints and opinions is what accelerates the world to new discoveries. I like when people are different and dont conform to society. im kind of a anarchist tho. LOL
Iâm also basically an anarchist. I think thereâs a massive difference between forcing people at gunpoint to do a certain thing and encouraging people to follow a good path.
You probably wouldnât want someone you care about to get addicted to crack. But you wouldnât kill them if they refused to quit. Nahmean?
