It’s been a difficult few days I’m not going to lie.

My colleagues want Telegram completely shut down in every country due to online child safety concerns such as CSAM. It’s been a little bit difficult for me to constantly be the one who risks my career to say that survivors also deserve digital privacy rights and strong encryption as well as every human on planet earth.

Telegram can be removed but as a society and as survivor advocates we won’t have addressed the root causes of the abuse and so the problem will continue, unfortunately.

The precious time that is being spent attacking Telegram would have been better spent educating the youth and parents about online safety. This would have worked towards preventing these crimes before they happen and end up online in the first place. 💔

Sorry to long emotional post but I’m basically out here alone pushing back and it’s not easy. Probably the closest aligned to me are the digital privacy rights activists but we have different rolls.

You're fighting the good fight, we appreciate you 🫡

Thank you. I will lose this specific fight unfortunately.

We should just shut down the entire Internet due to safety concerns from these kinds of dummies

Your colleagues are asleep at the wheel. In the end we win.

Do they not see how useful good privacy tools are for victims trying to get out of their current bad situation?

Not that I rate telegram as a good privacy tool.

Do they pretend like this doesn't exist on most if not all the other platforms? If not, are they calling for those to be shutdown too?

No it is just the fact that Telegram has the keys. So how can one be this naive, to think this keys will not be used to decrypt all chats?

It is always the same. There is just no good rason why to build on trust in things where no trust is needed. Use e2ee services that do not log and save metadata. There is not that much they could share even if they comly fully.

I’ve always thought a significant problem isn’t Telegram.. or social media in general but naivety of parents with respect to kids on the internet. Even when I used CompuServe (paid online service) kids would use their parents accounts and of course being a pay service we always thought it was at least young adults we were interacting with. I had to explain to someone who let their 9 year old use their account (this 9 year old was being incredibly rude under the guise of being an adult) that if you don’t let your child unsupervised on the streets of downtown Manhattan why do you let them onto the internet (in this case online services). It can be just as dangerous….

I don’t think that it sunk in with that parent. I’m sure most think it’s “words on a screen”. It can be far more than that to predators. Parents need to NOT let their kids online.. not FB, TwitX, instagram etc. (and by NO means mastodon). I had a predator try to go after my own daughter. Now that she’s grown she’s like “OMG I’m glad you intervened and lost your shit like that!”

Centralized social media is like a drug because it’s so easy to get to. And kids if they have a mental or emotional “hole” in them they’re trying to fill for whatever reason - being acceptance or attention or whatever - social media is the easiest way for them to fill it. Because its all right there in the palm their hands.

You should write about this. You just nailed it. You have a gift for speaking about it. Just saying.

Trying to figure out where I should share it. Perhaps when I get my blog back up.

Put it on nostr.

Ok. Let me expand on it a bit right now it’s all anecdote and personal experience.. I can add a couple of cases that I know about that are clear and public examples.

It took me years to say what you said in a comment effortlessly. You have a gift at explaining it. 💜

That is incredibly kind of you to say. Thank you.

It is sad to see people being such blatant, distopian despots, especially when they think they are doing evil for a good cause. Evil has such a hold on the minds of people that they think they would be doing good by attacking every human in earth. It is hard to understand because I'm not low intelligence, ignorant of history, and evil.

I have compassion for my colleagues perspectives. I was just like them. It took a really long time to realize that there are better solutions available.

I was disgusted when I first heard Snowden first speak about CSAM and privacy. My training taught me that the government was going to help fix it. My training taught me that tech was the enemy of children.

So how do we work towards breaking that perspective and offer solutions that truly serves humanity?

Keep doing what you are doing. You are like Gandalf on the bridge with the balrog, forgive the cheesy analogy. I can't do that. I don't have the ability to see the possibility for growth in people when it's stuff I could understand as a small child. I don't see a way to fix that and it causes me discomfort, so I always choose to avoid people, don't offer my perspective (bc what's the point) much, and work alone. Your path is higher in this way.

Yes. But I also do not see why to try defending an insecure messanger that does not offer e2ee and therefore all messages can be decrypted by the service without difficulty. Sorry but users who did use chats that are no private chat, just did not care about security.

Shutting down Telegram feels like cops showing off seized drugs. All for show, really.

We've been slow and steady introducing our teen to the internet and smartphones. Still pretty locked down, but it lets us keep having those important discussions. It's not easy, but she admits she's not dealing with the same issues as her friends. She feels more in control. Funny enough, I'd say she's got more freedom because of it.

Sounds like a terrible job. Easy solution, tell them Macron is a pedo and quit.
