The problem is, over the years, a lot of mediocre (I am being nice here) workers have managed to get the visa without much effort. The corporate greed at the top, to keep the wages of existing employees (H1-B and others) low, has also contributed to this problem.

As a result, the unsuspecting H-1Bs are made to work very hard just to save their jobs and pay from their own pockets for the ever increasing health insurance year after year while the salary increments are negligible.

They inevitably buy the American dream and end up in long term debt to pay for the house they barely get to live in. It is like paying someone interest to live under constant stress and fear of losing the job and status. They are, unfortunately, not smart enough to see the big picture.

Think about it. Why should H1-B (read: “highly skilled”) workers be worried about getting deported? Will they lose their skills on deportation? Those who get worried know how they have gamed the system and are not as highly skilled as their visa claims.
