This. To me it felt like a sci fi golden age plot wrapped in enough classical knowledge to make it approachable for people who are, often, snobby about sci fi. I'm sure that wasn't the author's intention. A good book but I'm not sure about great. Because I've been somewhat busy I have read quick reads recently like Jesus Christ Kinski by Benjamin Myers, Brat by Gabriel Smith and Strange Houses by Uketsu. In descending order of enjoyment. The ones I didn't enjoy aren't mentioned.
