Watching a TV show with my wife called "Restaurants at the end of the world", Malta episode. This lady's family makes sea salt for cooking, has for a hundred years or so.

The guy interviewing her says "so salt used to be a currency?"

She says "Yes, its the old bitcoin!"

Took me a minute, thanks for your patients. Its on Netflix, I think Malta is the first episode of the first season. This link defaults to season 2 for some reason.
