It’s a heart warming thought, but I believe it’s going to take a propulsion system other than a ballistic, hydrocarbon based one, that doesn’t subject the vehicle to extreme stress at max “Q” when achieving escape velocity, to reach that level of safety. Imagine us being able to get to orbital altitude at speeds low enough where contact with a single foreign object won’t result in a catastrophic breaching of containment and life support. Ain’t no way anyone is strapping their kid to a pressurized vessel atop a rocket.
And once we solve that, we have the challenge of dealing with the time required to get anywhere worth going, within a small portion of a human lifetime, with our sanity and our musculature still intact.
I think our ingenuity and creativity would be better spent figuring out how to move this world and this society away from the giant tax farms/prisons they have been for all of recorded history.
Space and the science fiction surrounding it is a shitcoin. False hope for a life beyond Earth’s struggles. The only thing driving innovation in aerospace right now is achieving an edge militarily. It’s the only reason any government would ever spend the resources they currently are trying to reliably get to and inhabit the moon and Mars. And these two destinations barely qualify as “space” when one considers it would take 3.7 million years at the speed of a commercial jet to reach our nearest stellar neighbour.
In the meantime I’ll hopefully be gardening, raising animals and enjoying sunrises and sunsets in the company of my family and friends for most of what’s left of my time here.
