Parents are people. People deserve love, understanding, patience, and forgiveness.

People also need to be held to standards of behavior. People also need to be held accountable for not living up to those basic standards.

If your parents used to or still berate, beat, belittle, or otherwise harm you or prevent you from improving yourself, you're allowed to resent them. You're allowed to hate them as much as you would any other PERSON who doesn't live up to the basic standards of human interaction.

Basic standards: don't hit people, don't insult people, don't interfere with people when they're doing their best, back off and apologize when you've hurt someone (even if it was accidental)

Parents are not 5-year-olds. They understand this shit with their friends. Why should they get to revert to emotional infancy when it comes to the person or people they're supposed to be helping to make it in this world

Agreed. All humans fuck up, but having crotch goblins does not somehow exempt you from being held to the same basic standards of human interaction. Kids need guidance and discipline, and if you can't understand the difference between than and bullying or abuse you will be resented.
