The original reason why trad social media started censorship was because of liability not because of all the leftist nonsense you hear about now.

Now we have relays that have no liability and people still are building censorship tools.

The cognitive dissonance is so strong.

It shouldn't be surprising that some people want this and some want that. But look at what they're able to build. They can build censorship tools, and I can build anti-censorship tools. And may the best client win.

Meh. I'd like better filtering tools. I don't consider that censoring the same way putting up no trespassing signs on my property and ensuring the riffraff don't get into my home (not via the sign, but, well, that's where my analogy falls apart).

Traditional social media invented "filtering tools" and that has created the shit mess we have now. If we want tools that reflect our reality and society to progress we can't just filter out voices we don't like.

It will inevitably devolve into blocking and not listening to groups you don't like.

The solution to "hate speech" or whatever you want to call is better speech. The problem we have now is speech silos which are enabled by filtering tools.

The follow button is your filter.

No, I don't think that's correct. The filtering tools are also useful for searching. It's harder that I'd like to find stuff on nostr, too, so it's not that I just want to "not be shown this" I want to be able to find things more easily.

Big tech using LLMs to block search results, prevent videos from being sent, or to even get people more angry in order to get them to spend more time on their platform. Those are detestable to me. I also hate sort algorithms. Being able to filter out CSAM or adjacent gross stuff like AI generated CSAM or other deviant images is a very reasonable thing for a relay operator to want since that can end their life, quite literally.

I do believe in free speech, but, that does not mean that I don't also respect people's right to association, too. If someone doesn't want to be associated with that kind of thing, there's very little they can do on a platform like nostr at this point.

You're probably correct that it will devolve into small-brained silos, but that already happens here so I don't see much point worrying about general human behavior.

I also agree that "hate speech" is best countered with better speech, but, you know, I don't really want to listen to hateful and gross things all day. 🤷‍♂️

The follow button is best accompanied by the block button.
