VW Mk4 TDIs (Golf, Jetta, Passat) get my highest recommendation. Durable as hell, 40+ mpg, fun to drive, look nice, cheap, easy to work on.

Stupidly sold mine a few years ago and still regret it. Had 300,000+ miles on er and had never missed a start for me in years of hard miles.
