Nostr is a protocol based on servers called “relays’’. These relay servers allow for json files to be sent and received by any individual who is also connected to the same relay as yourself. Relays can be operated by anyone. Being on the most popular relays allows you access to connect with a larger audience. Or you can just setup your own relay for your community and keep it small.

Relays are what allow Nostr to be decentralised. Twitter has one central server that everyone gives ups their data/information too. This server can deplatform you for whatever reason Twitter company policies see fit like deemed “hate speech” or spreading so called “misinformation”.

Whereas with Nostr’s relay model means you can send and receive communications from as many as many relay servers as you wish. A relay server can ban/mute/kick you if it desires, however the user can just move to another relay or just run your own relay. Since there is no central server the user has the power.
