It's humic acid. The final breakdown products of compost. AKA 'Leonardite' which is the form of carbon right before the various stages of coal are formed.

It's really good organic fertilizer buffer as it binds up water, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (along with a bunch of other stuff).
