The way I see it, you still have an immutable kind 1 event as the original note, and an edit history on top of it. Seems legit
You would know more about the nuts and bolts than I, but, it's not friendly to any other client. More importantly, it invites crappy behavior.

The current implementation is “not friendly to other clients”. It forks threads in a way that other users (of clients that don’t support edits) are interacting with different content thread than users of the ONE client that supports it.
Given this, either ALL clients MUST implement this as a NIP (which are SUPPOSED to be optional) or #nostrisforked.
User experience trumps all, and edits as they are break UX of nostr notes.
It’s that simple.
Edits should always be an addition at the bottom of a post. Like what redditors do. Twitter's editing is also a duck all feature.
