Public profiles and repos are already public, and private ones dont become public if you follow someone.
What do you think the benefit is beyond the above publicly available info?

tbh i don't know github's privacy practices very well. i'm probably just paranoid
I guess your like the majority who does not read terms of service & privacy policy. If you did you would know & if you have concerns you would be hosting your own gitea.

I make a little software for my "world." git and its server repos help me keep track of my own small personal development. I'm long past being a pro software developer back in the days of svn.
I only use github to download and browse anonymously sometimes. I occasionally log in over VPN+tor to make comments or issues
