You are correct that Hebrew and cross (verb) share a root, as the name came from Abraham’s crossing of the desert, but that has zero affiliation with a cross (noun), also called a crucifix. That’s a completely different word with a completely different root and the correlation you’re seeing pushed in those articles you’re finding only works when you disregard the original language and translate it into English without context.

Also, Abraham and his descendants weren’t monotheists for the first few thousand years, they were henotheists. Monotheism wouldn’t become adopted by the Hebrews until several hundred years before Jesus.

Ancient Hebrew is a language that dates back thousands of years and branched from Akkadian. Canaanites didn’t actually have their own language and spoke mostly Moabite, Hebrew, or Phoenician, depending on their region.

While modern Hebrew is different, it is based entirely on the ancient Hebrew. An incredible amount of work was done to modernize the language with an expanded vocabulary and updated grammar, but anyone that is fluent in modern Hebrew can also read and at least minimally understand ancient Hebrew in the same way that any fluent modern English speaker can read and understand Shakespeare.
