Funny I was just talking to my wife about this. She couldn't believe my parents made me pay rent to live in their house while saving to afford a mortgage in one of the most expensive places in the world, SE England. She's Greek and the idea of not helping your children, financially, parentally, etc until you literally retire is absurd. My parents now don't understand why we spend much more time with her family than them 🤣

I admire the Latin American way of multiple generations living in the same household and supporting each other. This helps to take care of the oldest generation. The generation with young kids gets help with watching and raising them from the older generation. And the youngest generation gets to live rent free while helping with chores around the house.
