Many political scientists note that authoritarian systems gain traction when citizens disengage from politics, convinced their voice or vote doesn’t matter. They also emerge when people stop resisting. No politician is perfect, but the chances for change are always greater when we stay engaged. Accepting so-called “temporary” emergency powers is especially dangerous, and I worry we are seeing echoes of this in the way choices around Bitcoin are unfolding. I hope I’m wrong.
