Alright nerds. I bought a old HP Elite 3800 desktop off eBay. Ordered some upgrades mostly from eBay: a new GeForce graphics card, 24G RAM, 500G SSD for OS (Linux Mint), a secondary 2T SSD for Bitcoin Core, and a i7-3770 to upgrade the CPU.

Not top of the line but very functional and zippy for what I am going to ask it to do. Got the whole kit for around $300 which is a lot cheaper than a Pi setup for a node and I get a daily driver on top. I still have to put everything together and get it running but itโ€™s a lot easier than people think

Not running Proxmox to break apart into VMs/Containers? Could run a lot more than full node on it if wanted.

Like what?

nostr relay like strfry? pi-hole is another good one.

Just got a Mac mini i7 up and running with 1tb. Set up with Linux and umbrel. Pretty smooth process minus taking forever and glitching out while doing initial sync. Love finding purpose for these older machines.

If you have any funds left over, I'd get a second storage drive for redundancy. Remember, all storage drives have a 100% failure rate. Being able to have a RAID even if it's a Linux software RAID would help with machine longevity.

What's the GeForce graphics card for?

I thought everything else you purchased would do the job quite well.

Just to get a hdmi video output for monitors

Oh one thing I should probably mention #[2] ... Do you have a UPS? Nothing quite like being able to shutdown your node safely when the power goes out.

No not yet. One thing at a time. Iโ€™m only a weekend warrior and very much a newbi.

All good mate! I was meant to get one a few days ago but I had to prioritize some other hardware. It's definitely next on my list though. Once you have a NUC that IS NOT A Pi.

- You garner ALOT more faith in the uptime of your system and it's capacity to route lightning and do general Node things. It's around this time I felt the importance of getting a UPS ๐Ÿ˜„
