To come on the other side of this, musicians should be free to support whoever they like. The idea that people in the public eye should keep their mouths shut on politics baffles me.

I'm not saying you shouldn't... Saying the opposite of that. You can broadcast and opinion, so can they. Doesn't matter if you think they suck. Musicians get asked to do loads of stuff, some are more principled than others for sure.
Anyone who votes based on what a celebrity says is probably doing it wrong anyway. Unless it's Phil Collins, then definitely do that.
