Thanks Doug. I understand the relationship between the two and I’ve used both Start9 and Umbrel. I don’t want any of that. I like and use Bitcoin Core. I’ve tried installing an LND node in the passed and have run into issues.

Ok good, sorry, some people think it’s two separate things. I’m with you, I’m looking for a way to go to the next level and run a more autonomous node and not rely on a 3rd party’s app. Umbrel is great for beginners or those that want to get started and participate. But for some who want more, there is no easy way yet that I know of.

No worries. As you know, it’s quite the journey figuring all of this out and you’re right. Umbrel is fantastic to get an understanding and get immersed in both networks.
Now I’m to the point where I want to strip away any feature I don’t use to just run what I want. Obviously I haven’t found a clear path yet.
You should be able to run a headless setup with most/any linux distro. (I run mine on a raspberry pi) Running headless removes the gui overhead and should let you more easily remove other deadwood.
Either way could work for me. I’m not too worried about the gui overhead for RTL or Thunderhub. But I’m fine going headless if its reliable. I don’t plan on being a routing node.
Just have a few channels big enough to transact.
Many of the LND install guides for Ubuntu, are older which is why I think I’ve run into issues. CLN I can get to work locally, but keep getting an error when I try to generate an ip address.
Have you tried the ministry of nodes 2022 Ubuntu node box guides? I believe there is one for installing a LND node.
